Last year there were an estimated 18 million Twitter users. That figure has now jumped to nearly 40 million. Next to America, Brazil has the highest number of Twitter users worldwide, and Twitter wants to capitalize on the matter.

Twitter, the world’s popular 140-character message social networking site plans to soon have a business residence in Brazil in order to capitalize on their current popularity and bolster support for the social media network as goes head-to-head and vies for user usage against sites such as Facebook and Google+.

The Twitter director and person overseeing Twitter’s physical settlement in Brazil, Guilherme Ribenboim, says: “We believe our new office in Brazil will allow us to get closer to the users and show the value of our platform.”

Currently Facebook already has an office in Brazil, as does Google. Twitter may be a bit late to the party, but by no means does it appear to have affected them adversely to this point. Twitter has a massive huge user base in Brazil, and by now having a a physical presence there it should bring more attention to the social media group and better enable it to viably monetize their services.

Twitter currently has somewhere between 35 and 40 million users in Brazil, a figure second in the world, following only the United States in total number of Twitter users. Ironically though, ranks 5th in global Twitter usage according to the Semiocast research group, a number that might actually be higher if it weren’t for Facebook going viral in the nation at the moment.

Also, Brazil’s mobile usage is currently growing . Brazil currently has about 200 million people and a growing mobile network system that’s expanding. As for the moment, only about 1/3 of all tweets come from mobile users there, but with a growing mobile network such as theirs, Twitter expects that to change as well.

Twitter’s Guilherme Ribenboim has also been quoted as saying, “Brazil has rather mature Internet and advertisement markets. Our audience is very big and active … We’re going to try to monetize it.”All things considered, now appears to be a prime opportunity for Twitter to setup shop in Brazil. As Twitter may now be able to better leverage their opportunities to cash in on the upcoming 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games being held in Brazil as well.
